I have just received and am testing out the PROFOTO B10. This new studio strobe of the PROFOTO family comes out as the most extraordinary unit of the year 2018 and here is the first part of my review, with an unboxing and giving my personal opinion on the product as a PROFOTO User and someone moving quite a lot around the world to shoot visuals with artificial light.
First impressions on the packaging of the PROFOTO B10
The PROFOTO B10 comes in a nice large box, as usual the black being the key element of all units, as founder Cony Dufgran has always wanted it to be. Inside the box comes a nice pouch, solid, stable, black for sure, and with a heavy duty zip along it’s center, and a carry handle to take it around or store it.
When opening the box, the impression pursues. A personal message from Cony Dufgran in the center, hiding the flash clamp cable and separators, and the unit on one side, the charger on the other side of the pouch.
The separation of the pouch is done in 3 elements. Unit, Central block for various elements and the AirTTL-F remote for example, and final block for charger and cables, this final block is separated in 2 with a velvety removable separator. The whole package is very clean, handy, solid and really secures the whole PROFOTO B10 unit for transport and travel.
The size of the PROFOTO B10
Compared with the D1 or B1x, the PROFOTO B10 is seriously compact. I have compared it in size with my 55-150 2.8 from Fujifilm and my Profoto A1 to show you how it can easily be stored in your camera bag and how you can now enjoy massive power in a super compact unit. You can’t beat size, weight and sturdiness when travelling abroad, and I am just looking forward to all my future travels with a hand luggage, to shoot sport, commercial lifestyle and editorials with these units.
What’s in the bag ?
The whole unit is composed of :
- 1 Profoto B10 Unit
- 1 Profoto B10 Protection cap
- 1 Tripod mount
- 1 Battery
- 1 Charger + power cable
- 1 USB Cable for upgrades (for those without the iphone app)
- 1 lanyard
- 1 Travel case
- 2 separators
How design affects function ?
Design always affects function, and good design without function is Art, function without design is Functional gear, but great Ergonomics make the whole difference, and here are a few things which in my humble opinion make this unit amazing at first sight.
First of all the charger. It has a flat side to it, who would expect it ? round for many, it could roll around… with a velcro attached to it’s side, it allows to stow away the cables. But most importantly… it allows it to be attached to a tripod or lightstand without slipping away, brilliant thinking. It’s still black, yes as usual, but to avoid reflection on any product, so well thought.
The other great element is that it can now be powered and charged whilst in use. Profoto have listened to all their users and professional photographers who were asking for this to happen in the future, as well as the whole innovation which comes with the unit.
The USB Port can be accessed with the battery connected, and the power is just below the unit, on the side of the battery, making everything very streamlined when on sector.
The Profoto B10 Unit
The unit itself is compact, very solid, and the buttons are soft, slick and very simple to use. turn, press & turn, that’s it ! and the screen is simple. you see directly what you’re modifying, because when you’re turning a button, what you’re changing highlights and the rest goes dim. if you’re changing power by full increments… the full number highlights and the decimals dim, and same goes when you’re changing by decimals to go down 1/3 of a stop for example.
The colour temperature of the modelling light is quite impressive. a nice deep warm, to a beautiful cold temperature allows for stunning work in case of video interviews, or playing with colour temperature during shoots with continuous light. The fact that it can be adapted and updated or modified by the profoto App from the AppStore is just yet another crazy feature that profoto has come out with.
With all these features, the weight, and the ring size being compatible with all Profoto modifiers, the light weight of all the profoto OCF Modifiers, and the durability of the battery, i’m sold to this amazing unit for all my commercial work. May it be for events with a boost, portraits, sports & lifestyle, very small studio space, and travelling, I can have 2 units and my whole gear in my Fstop Anja bag, and some clothes and i’m off for months of work and new creative shoots.
Let me know what you think of this unit in the comments below, and i’ll be posting a Part 2 with more work and a few BTS of how I got the shots, where i’m going to head out, with a total newbie, and create appealing and commercial looking imagery.
